Sorare Partners with the English Premier League

They left it right until the end of the transfer window but the deal is finally over the line.

Sorare, a fantasy football/soccer game, allows players to collect football/soccer players in the form of NFTs and compete against one another with rewards based on the real-world performances of the players.

The game currently has 3m users but this could be set to soar following the latest announcement that they have agreed on a 4-year deal with the English Premier League for a total of $150m.

The platform before this latest partnership was agreed upon already boasted more than 280 football/soccer organisations and all 30 MLB teams.

This is a really promising partnership for the global adoption of NFTs as the English Premier League is the most watched and supported league in the world.

Azuki and Robinhood Hack

Another disaster took place within the space following the publishing of our last newsletter.

Both Azuki and Robinhood were at the forefront of a major cyber attack which saw just under $1m worth of NFTs stolen.

The thief managed to take control of the Twitter accounts of both Azuki and Robinhood as well as the Discord channels where phishing links were posted.

On Robinhood's Twitter, a link was displayed for a new token that was to be launched which was a sham.

The hack, which included the theft of 122 NFTS, two of which were Mutant Apes, was achieved through a devious practice where signature pending orders were induced through Seaport.

Thankfully, both Azuki and Robinhood managed to regain control of their Twitter and Discords. The final damage has not yet been clarified but it is estimated 484.99 ETH worth of NFTs has been stolen.

NFT Trademark Trial Gets Underway

Just like London buses, you wait forever for one and then two come along.

It's not that we are fans of court cases, we are however intrigued at what precedents will be handed down from these cases that will shape the future of Web3.

It was only at the end of last week that OpenSea were sued over their actions regarding theft and here, we have a different issue.

The question is, to what extent are real-world trademarks enforceable in the digital world and what rights do creators have?

This trial in question is between luxury brand, Hermes, and digital artist Mason Rothschild and is set to begin on the 30th of January.

Hermes is accusing the artist of trademark infringement for promoting and selling MetaBirkins, an NFT collection inspired by the brand's famous handbag.

Hermes argues that Mason improperly used the trademark and potentially tricked customers into believing the brand supports the project. Mason argues that his work is protected under the 1st Amendment which allows for no limits on free expression.

This may not lead to a nationwide precedent but it will certainly be an intriguing outcome whatever happens.

Sandbox Announces New Partnership

Sandbox wasn't messing about when they stated that they wanted to expand their ecosystem by onboarding new partners. Their plans for the upcoming year were big and include new land sales targeted to specific regions and industries to attract new customers.

They currently have more than 40m global installs on mobile and in case you have not heard of them, they offer players and creators a decentralized platform to create 3D worlds and game experiences where users can store, trade and monetize their creations.

They already have 160 existing partnerships but their latest comes in the form of NFT Tech.

NFT Tech creates products that speed up Web3 adoption by binding utility into digital assets. Their technology allows for increased consumer engagement, enables digital asset ownership and discovers new business models.

This seems like a match made in heaven, with Sandbox's ambition to continue growing along with NFT Tech's infrastructure, this could be a very exciting year for the project.

We shared the demise of this company back in November following the FTX collapse.

In case you weren't a subscriber, the company in question is BlockFi which had $256.9 of readily available funds and liabilities ranging from $1bn to $10bn.

The reason they are in this section is despite the Bankruptcy they have been permitted to pay $10m in staff bonuses.

At a time when investors' funds have been lost forever, the concern they have shared was regarding their bonuses which have now been confirmed.
